Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Public perception of governance and accountability plays a crucial role in shaping the legitimacy and effectiveness of local government institutions. In Sokoto South Local Government Area (LGA), Sokoto State, the citizens' views on how well the local government performs in terms of service delivery, transparency, and responsiveness to their needs have significant implications for future electoral outcomes and governance strategies. This study aims to examine how the public perceives the governance and accountability practices of local government authorities in Sokoto South LGA and how these perceptions influence the trust and confidence that citizens place in their elected representatives.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts by the local government to improve service delivery and governance in Sokoto South LGA, there is limited research on how the public perceives these efforts. Public perception of governance and accountability is essential for assessing the effectiveness of local government policies and practices.
